Electrophysiology Study and Catheter Ablation:

The purpose of an electrophysiology study and catheter ablation is to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms. Certain people suffer from electrical dysfunction of the heart caused by abnormal electrical connections or abnormal cells in the heart. We will help you determine if you are likely to have any of these abnormal electrical connections or abnormal cells. An electrophysiology study involves placing several very small electrical wires inside the heart to identify the source of an abnormal heart rhythm. If a source can be identified, then the rhythm can often be "ablated" by placing a small wire in the heart to apply radiofrequency energy. In some cases "cryo-therapy" can be applied to ablate abnormal cells that are responsible for the abnormal electrical rhythm.

An electrophysiology study and ablation procedure is considered minimally invasive and is not open heart surgery. In most cases you will be discharged home safely the morning after the procedure.
